February is Heart Health month, and one of the best things you can do for your heart is take care of YOU!  We have heard that certain foods are good or bad for our heart, but we also need to take care of the rest of our body to protect our heart. You body is constantly looking out for your brain and your heart.  It will do whatever it takes to protect those vital organs. 

Add heart healthy activities to your day, schedule time for exercise and rest, choose healthy foods, and do something fun everyday!

Heart healthy exercise can be any movement you choose, just don’t sit all day.  This body was created to move.  Run, walk, hike, bike, etc at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week (You can break it up into 3-10 minute sessions and still get wonderful benefits), do muscle strengthening activities at least twice a week using all of the major muscle groups (This helps with bone health and metabolism, too!), do some stretching, flexibility, and balance exercises like yoga at least twice a week. This sounds overwhelming, but you can break it up into small sessions and even combine some of them.  Do some stretching exercises or yoga after your endurance activity (walking or biking) to cool down. 

Choose foods that are in their whole state and avoid processed foods when you can. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and beans.  All of these are packed with nutrients, low in fat, and high in fiber.  I have some new recipes for you to try linked below!

Have fun! Playing and doing things you enjoy lowers stress, helps you sleep better, boosts positive feelings, and helps with relationships.  

Play then Rest!  Lack of sleep and rest can lead to a multitude of problems and disorders.  When we run around all day and rush to get through our to-do list, our body thinks we may be in danger.  Add too much caffeine and bright lights from technology, and our body doesn’t know how to slow down and rest properly.  Find time to quiet your mind. Look into relaxation techniques, restorative yoga, and/or meditation to put your body into a restful, safe state.  There are apps out there that can help, too.  I really like this one.
